Make a Difference Day 2014

Join the action on Oct. 25, 2014, the 24th annual Make A Difference Day, the nation’s largest day of community service. On Make A Difference Day 2014, millions of volunteers will unite to improve the lives of themselves and others in their communities.

In the Coachella Valley we will once again come together at the Tramway Road in support of United Way of the Desert. The Palm Springs Annual Tram Road Challenge is a 6K uphill run/walk presented by the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, Klein Clark Sports and The Desert Sun. Both KMIR and Lamar are our media partners. For over 25 years runners and walkers from around the world have been taking on the challenge. Participants climb 2,200 vertical feet in just over 3.7 miles. All finishers will receive a customized finishers medal, t-shirt and community breakfast.

But we don’t expect that you will just wake up on the morning of October 25th and decide to run up the side of a mountain! It takes a little bit of commitment and training, and The Desert Sun is here to help you! For nine weeks before the race, we will take you on a practice course every Saturday morning. You will benefit from our campaign coach, world famous rugby player and USC coach Tavita Vaicona who will put us through our paces, as well as get a chance to make new friends and see our wonderful valley. Go to our event schedule and check out the weekly warm up events that we have planned.

Valley companies are invited to sponsor this community event. The media attention that it attracts can only be good for business! A healthy workforce is not only a happier workforce, but a more efficient one. Health programs within the workplace can lower healthcare costs (direct and indirect costs of health insurance, workers compensation costs etc.) by improving health outcomes and reducing emergency room visits and hospitalizations of employees. A 10% discount on the registration fee is offered for company teams with ten or more members.

Valley schools are urged to bring children into the campaign. Children are born with an innate sense of charity and compassion. By sponsoring a child to run in the annual Tram Road Challenge you are giving them the opportunity to exercise not only their physical muscles, but their charitable muscles too. Children are encouraged to find sponsors for their run, raising money for United Way of the Desert. It gives kids a powerful boost of self-esteem to realize they can make a difference in someone’s life.
